Finding Balance in Life and Business

During coaching sessions with women entrepreneurs I’m often asked “How do we find an emotional and physical balance between a successful work life and having a life?”

Balance scales

In today’s economy, just working and earning an income is serious business – it seems to take more effort and hours than ever before. How do you carve out time and energy to have a well-rounded and enjoyable work and home life?

My answer is F – O – C – U – S.

Merriam-Webster.com defines focus this way: To concentrate attention or effort.

Focusing your attention and effort on keeping the important things important is key to finding balance in all areas of your life.

What is balance? Think of a teeter-totter. The teeter-totter is off-balance when both sides don’t have equal weight. If one side has more weight than the other, the side with more weight is stuck on the ground and can only get in balance when some of the extra weight is lifted off. That’s what happens when your life is off balance – one area has too much emotional or physical “weight” and the other important life areas don’t seem to have enough.

Emotional Balance: This is the inner sense of peace you feel as you think about your overall life. Emotional balance is reflected back in your day-to-day self-talk, predominate thoughts and general attitude of peace and well-being.

Physical Balance:
This is the outer physical reflection of how well you are creating ongoing balance in all the important aspects of your life. Your physical balance is reflected back in your general health and overall physical well-being.

Staying focused and keeping the important things important is about knowing how to separate work time from home time. It’s the teeter-totter balance of being emotionally and physically at work during work hours and being at home mind, body and spirit during personal time.

Please remember: You have complete power over where you choose to place your focus. The question becomes can you stay focused on where you are at the present time, whether it is at work or home? Can you emotionally leave work at work? Can you emotionally be home when you are at home and not be mentally somewhere else? The key to balance is staying focused on keeping the important things important, wherever you are and whatever you are doing.

How you choose to focus your time and energy will be reflected back to you in how you are living life.
