Making Time To Organize Your Life

I’m going to make a bold statement: I believe we have choices. We can live and work in disorganization or, we can decide to live in an organized and well-thought out home and work environment. I also believe that when your environment is disorganized, your life is disorganized.

Those of you who know me and work with me, know I have many irons in the fire. I’ve learned early on in my career that to keep from feeling frustrated and as if I were always playing catch-up with my day-to-day tasks, I had to find a way to get and stay organized. Getting and staying organized is more than cleaning your desk and filing away papers, it’s organizing how you’re living your life too.

I’ve found in my own life that when my desk is messy, my mind was messy. I begin losing focus and feeling out of control of my schedule. Have you ever felt that way? There is an emotional link between how we organize our work and living environment and how we are feeling about how we are controlling our lives.

Take a good hard look at your desk, your kitchen, your bathroom cabinets or the inside of your car. Are they clean, neat and organized? If they are messy and disorganized, how do you feel when you enter your office or enter your car? Do you feel relaxed, empowered and in control?

Can you see the point I’m trying to make here? If you’re outside environment is messy and disorganized, your inside probably is too.

Are you choosing to allow disorganization to control your life? If you believe you have choices, what are you willing to do about what isn’t working to help you be more at peace with your inside (emotional) and outside (physical) world?

Here are a few suggestions:
1. Take a look around where you spend the majority of your day.
What would you like to change? Would you paint? Would change furniture? Would move to another location? Would you clean it up?

Make a decision about what you’d change and then change it. Yes, commit to changing the space into something more comfortable for you. Block out time and do it!

2. Write your goals for the next three months – just 90 days. If you’re feeling out of control, it may be because you don’t know where you are headed personally, professionally, financially and/or spiritually. What would like to accomplish? Why would you like to accomplish it? Are you ready to form a plan of action? Are you willing to break these goals into bite-sized pieces? Are you willing to take action?

3. Hire someone to help you get organized. Find a professional organizer who can help you set up a system to get and stay organized. Hire a coach or mentor who will work with you to set realistic goals and understand what maybe keeping off balance. Find a way to take control of the clutter and to gain better control of your home and work environment.

If you’re feeling unmotivated every time you walk into your office or frustrated trying to find something in the kitchen, remember you have choices. You can give yourself the power to clean out the emotional and physical clutter or, you leave things the way they currently are.

    Yes! With a relocation to a new state last week, I truly appreciate the importance of organization, even when all of our possessions are in boxes! Important papers and receipts have to be easily located in all of the moving boxes! Setting up a new residence is a great opportunity to organize everything in a way that makes life flow better. Today, I get to design my new office… right after the gym. I can hardly wait!
