I never took Mother’s Day for granted, but I don’t think I realized the significance of the day until I no longer had my mother here with me to celebrate. It truly is a very special day to honor our mothers.
I know, some people call it a “Hallmark” holiday, but I believe it is more emotionally significant than that. We all get so busy with our lives that we often forget to make the time to tell those we love how much we care about them and appreciate having them in our lives.
The other day I spent time looking through old photographs mom had collected over the years. I wanted to put a picture of my mom on this blog along with a Mother’s Day message. I realized that there were very few pictures of just the two of us. Family photos with my dad, with the aunts, uncles and grandmothers, but not just of mom and I. I felt as if I’d missed a wonderful opportunity to capture some special moments that only the two of us had shared.
I found one photo of mom holding me on my first birthday and the other photo was from a trip we had taken together in 1987. I also realized that in 1987 mom was younger than I am today. Where had the years gone? I think I may have taken them for granted – like we’d have all the time in the world together.
Mom passed away ten years ago last month. Honestly, I have no regrets because we spent so much quality and loving time together. I do though wish I had more photographs of just the two of us. I have my many happy and loving memories locked securely in my mind and for that, I am grateful. I know she will hear me today as I wish her, “Happy Mother’s Day mom.”
How are you celebrating Mother’s Day this year?
