We have a guest blog post from Marilyn Sarno, Independent Consultant Apriori Beauty.
Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall our skin ages. I spoke about the intrinsic and extrinsic factors responsible for skin aging in my last blog.
Intrinsic factors include genetic, hormonal changes and cellular decline.
Extrinsic factors are those we can control and include excessive sun exposure, smoking, air pollution, daily wear and tear, and lifestyle habits.
Since we are moving quickly towards Spring/Summer I will focus on the primary extrinsic factor to aging – excessive sun exposure. Research has shown without a doubt that the leading cause of skin aging called photoaging – is too much sun exposure.
I was never a sun worshipper in my younger days; however, it is the cumulative effect of small doses of sunlight daily that count.
UVA rays penetrate glass and can cause skin damage when we sit near a window or driving a car. Well, I have done a lot of driving without sunscreen on my face and hands. I have a small age spot on the left side of my face and that is the side where I was exposed to bright sun daily while driving!
Everyone needs sunscreen! It is the sun that ruins unprotected skin and causes aging e.g. crinkly skin, liver spots, dull complexion, rough texture, spider veins and various types of bumps and lumps.
Here are some suggestions to protect your skin when exposed to the sun:
• Use superior moisturizer with broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection on face, and hands each time you go outside.
• Wear a brimmed hat
• Lip balm on lips
• Wear sunglasses that provide 100% UV protection
• Keep your moisturizer with spf 25 or greater in your car for touch ups
• Replace sunscreen yearly; it loses potency over time and If left out in the sun.
These quick tips apply in all seasons especially the winter because the glare of winter sun coming off the snow and ice increases exposure to harmful UV radiation.
Enjoy your outdoor fun activities while protecting your beautiful, glowing skin!
