As life gets busier we sometimes forget the little things, little things that can make a big difference in the lives of others. Let’s take for example the two little words “thank you.” Thank you is easy to spell, easy to pronounce and yet, not always so easy to say.
I’ve seen first-hand how a simple “thank you” can brighten someone’s day. Here’s an example: I was checking out at the grocery store recently and the young man bagging my groceries looked pretty grumpy and not too friendly. He packed my bags and placed them in my cart. Before I left the check-out line I stopped and placed my hand on his arm and said, “Thank you for taking such good care of my groceries, I appreciate you.” He looked at me as if I had two heads. He lowered his eyes and said to me, “You are the first person who has said thank you to me in the two weeks I’ve been working here.”
Thank you – there is so much power in those two simple words. When someone sincerely tells you “thank you,” how do you feel? Happy? Satisfied? Appreciated? You can say thank you in person, send a thank you in a card, leave a hand written note on someone’s desk or in a lunch bag, send a quick text or even leave a voice mail message – the key is that you remembered to say “thank you.”
During the next few days, how many ways will you share the power of a sincere thank you? Here are a few suggestions:
_ Your spouse or significant other more often
_ Your child
_ Your parents
_ An employee
_ A team member
_ A friend
_ A customer or client
_ The clerk in a store
_ The wait staff at a favorite restaurant
_ The delivery person
_ Who would you add to this list?
Do you have a “thank you” example to share with us in the comment section?
