I’m often asked how I decided to begin my speaking and writing career. Let me share my story. I remember longing for a group of like-minded women who wanted to come together to grow personally and professionally. You know, women empowering and supporting women in an atmosphere of caring and sharing.
In the 1980’s there were very limited choices. I didn’t have the availability of the Internet the way I have now – there wasn’t Facebook or Twitter. There was the telephone and face-to-face meetings – those were my choices. So honestly, my sphere of influence was pretty small.
About 25 years ago I learned first-hand the power of women supporting women.
It was a time in my life when I disliked my career choices. Despite years of education I was at a loss as what to do next. I was confused and felt disappointed with myself.
One cold bleak Midwest winter day I received a flyer about a professional development seminar for women. The seminar was reasonably priced and nearby. I figured I really had nothing to lose.
I walked into a room filled with like-minded women. Up on the stage was a beautifully dressed well-spoken woman who began sharing wonderful pearls of wisdom and stories of her own personal and professional development. This was the first time I’d ever been to anything like this. The room was packed with other women excited to learn more about professional success. I was enthralled and extremely impressed!
Right there and then I decided to empower women, just the way I had been empowered. That was an important day in my life. I’m still empowering women today – 25+ years later.
That day I came out of comfort zone my perspective on life, especially my life, had completely changed. I began living my purpose because I was on a mission to share what I discovered with other women.
About five years after that life-changing seminar I attended a convention in Dallas Texas for the National Speakers Association. I kept affirming to myself that my goal was to meet the woman speaker who had changed my life and thank her personally. I visualized and affirmed every day before the convention. When I registered at the convention and looked at the roster, her name was not among the attendees. My heart sank. I still went on visualizing and affirming. I didn’t give up.
The last day of the convention I took my seat. Out of the corner of my eye I saw a beautifully dressed woman walk into the room and head directly to the empty seat next to me. Yes, it was the woman who had had such a positive impact my life. I introduced myself and proceeded to thank her. I explained how she had changed my life for the positive. She hugged and thanked me and said I reinforced her purpose in life.
Today my goal is to share what I’ve learned over the past 25 plus years. I began this blog to encourage and empower women to live their dreams and go for their awesome goals.
